Isatou Ceesay

A nod of respect to Isatou Ceesay (1972-present)

Gambian activist Ceesay created the N´Jau Recycling Center in their home village to raise awareness and combat the plastic waste that was piling up in the community. At that time, women in Gambia were not allowed to work, expected to take care of the home and family. At first, Isatou worked in secret. Slowly, she began sharing her work with other women who joined her. Today Isatou has trained over 11,000 people all over her country in the dangers of plastic and the opportunities for up cycling waste, creating financial independence and freedom for her fellow country women.
