“I strongly believe that single purpose products need to be a thing of the past.

Every product should aim to serve in multiple ways.

For La Bom it made sense to focus on issues in line with our spirit and values.”

Empowering women

I’ve spent a lot of time in South Africa staying with my beloved and formidable cousin Zoe.  She works as a researcher in the field of HIV and sexual health and is passionate about tackling taboo subjects through open discussions within the local community.

During one of our rock climbing missions in the mountains she explained how menstruation is one of these subjects shrouded in shame. It is so hushed up that young girls literally have no idea what is happening to them the day their period arrives.

With little to no guidance during this difficult time and not enough money to afford the products to manage their menstruation, many girls end up missing a week of school each month and some drop out for good.

The most harrowing discovery was to learn that too often these girls resort to engaging in transactional sex to make money for pads and tampons.

During those discussions with Zoe, I began to understand the value and the power of the freedom I had previously taken for granted; how fortunate I have been to be able to move through the world, largely uninhibited by my natural cycle.

I wanted the business to acknowledge this, to honour this freedom by helping to facilitate it for others. To create an opportunity for Women to empower women, giving them the chance to steer their own ship into the future.

I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.

La Bom has recently partnered with The Cup Foundation who are on a mission to empower underprivileged girls worldwide by providing them with sustainable menstrual cups and education on sexuality and reproductive rights.  They also work with boys aged 13 – 16 to  help to break down the taboo surrounding menstruation and encourage understanding and empathy for girls’ feelings and the challenges they face during their period

For every bikini set or one piece sold online, La Bom funds The Cup Foundation the exact amount to provide one girl with a menstrual cup, education and long term support for her and her family; giving her the freedom to manage her cycle, her body, with ease and dignity whilst helping to keep flushed plastics out of the oceans.
